THE TULSA VOLUNTEER CENTER

"Matching volunteer resources with community needs"

The Tulsa Volunteer Center promotes volunteerism to expand and strengthen community services. The Center recruits volunteers, channels them toward local agencies' programs which meet community needs, and offers community-wide recognition for their work. The Center also helps service organizations and corporations utilize volunteers effectively.

Throughout our nation's history, Americans have volunteered. Latest studies show that 49 percent of all adult Americans do volunteer work, donating an average of 4.2 hours per week. Volunteer centers began to appear in the 1950s to support volunteer activities addressing human service needs in local communities. Today there are over 400 volunteer center in the United States. Some are independent nonprofit agencies, while others are programs of other organizations including local United Ways and community councils.

Tulsa's Volunteer Center was established in 1983 by the Community Service Council of Greater Tulsa, a United Way agency. It built upon groundwork laid by a group of agencies' volunteer program managers who had been meeting informally, exploring new ways to work together to encourage volunteerism. Financial support for the Center and its work comes from the Tulsa Area United Way, corporate contributions, grants and special fund raising events such as the Wrap Stop holiday gift wrapping service at Woodland Hills Mall and the annual "Beach Blanket Bunko" summer fundraising event.
